About This Album
Backstage is Andrew Doss's first full-length pop album, released in June 2022. Like Flight Plan before it, the album is essentially a compilation of previously released singles plus a few additional tracks — but it represented a massive creative leap: the first time Andrew committed fully to writing lyrics and singing on a record. After years of instrumental and ambient work, Backstage announced his arrival as a vocal artist.
Recorded at his home studio in Acworth, Georgia, and produced, mixed, and mastered by Ed Rogers, Backstage channels the melodic directness of 80s new wave with modern electronic production. The album explores themes of romantic pursuit, emotional vulnerability, and self-reinvention. "Ready" opens with an irresistible declaration of intent, while "Machinery Of The World" — later rerecorded as a duet for All At Once — established the signature song that would define Andrew Doss & The Werks.
"Tailspin" captures the anxiety of losing control in a relationship through aviation metaphors and urgent synth arpeggios, and "Don't Think Of Me" closes the album with a bittersweet farewell. The guitar work by Ed Rogers and bass by Eric Sands add organic warmth to the electronic foundations, creating a sound that bridges the gap between synthesizer-driven pop and full-band rock arrangements.
